Crusaders Defeat Paul VI in First Round

2/18/2026 10:29:00 PM

FEBRUARY 17 – MONTVALE, NJ – In the 5:30 PM First Round Match of the NJSIAA Non-Public "A" Tournament, the Crusaders soundly defeated Paul VI of Haddonfield 77-6 in a match time of about 18 minutes.  The match was held at St. Joseph Regional, the fourth seed in the tournament.  BC was seeded fifth and PVI was the 12th seed.
Chad Sadaka got things started off at 190 pounds with a pin in 46 seconds and after falling in the 215 pound weight class, the Crusaders picked up 8 pins (Ralphie Barca, Lucas Reeves, Gideon Gonzalez, Sowzrawca Tsay, Joey Canova, Manny Gusfa and AJ DiGiovanni).  Micah Loudermilk won by technical fall and BC won all other bouts by forfeit.
The Green Knights wrestled simultaneously against Pingry School, defeating 13th seeded Big Blue by a score of
68-9.  That set up the quarterfinal match to be wrestled at 7:00 PM, a rematch of the match earlier in the year in which the Crusaders fell 34-32 to SJR.

MATCH NOTES:  The Crusaders are now 2-2 all-time vs. Paul VI of Haddonfield.  The Eagles were the scourge of New Jersey Non-Public (Parochial) A Wrestling, winning 8 of the first 9 state group championships before BC defeated them in 1991.  The Eagles won their 9th title the following year, defeating BC as their run ended with 11 South Sectional titles as they were supplanted by Holy Cross of Delran in 1993. BC went onto winning state titles in 1994 and 1995 under the leadership of the program's founding coach, John Direnzo, and then two more titles in 2002 and 2003 under Coach Dave Bell.  Despite reaching five finals in the next six years, the Crusaders did not win its sixth title until 2012 when the dynasty truly took form.  BC won 8 consecutive titles before being knocked off by Delbarton in the North Section in 2020.  After the missed tournament of 2021 due to the state government's response to the Covid-19 pandemic, BC defeated Delbarton on "Criteria J" to win the 2022 North Non-Public "A" Sectional Championship and continue onto win the school's 14th state championship.
