OCTOBER 10 – ORADELL, NJ – The state's number 6-ranked Paramus Catholic Paladins arrived at the Jack on Saturday and for 24-minutes of football, two teams played evenly, neither grabbing an advantage, therefore tied at 7 as the halftime celebrations for the 1986 State Championship Team and Class of 1976 began.
From that point, it was all PC, who generated 14 third-quarter points which led to a 31-17 Paladin victory. The game was the ultimate reminder that we are responsible to BC 365 days of the year. Others only need to get it right once.
THIS ONE WAS NEVER GOING TO BE EASY
Despite a gaudy head-to-head record and win the previous week over Don Bosco Prep, everyone knew from the beginning of the season, PC would be a formidable opponent. They proved it with their smash-mouth style of play, rushing for well over 300 yards and picking up 400 yards in total offense. Amare' Newell impressed with his physicality as did Nick Mauro whose presence was felt all over the field
BC STRUGGLES TO GAIN ANY MOMENTUM
There was no sustained drive on either side until late in the first half when BC went on a nice touchdown scoring drive. Trey Tagliaferri found sophomore H-back Cruz Araujo for Araujo's first career touchdown. That lead it was quickly answered by PC who scored with seconds remaining in the half to tie the score at 7.
ALL PALADINS IN THE THIRD
The third quarter just seemed like whatever energy the Crusaders were able to muster coming into the game was gone. PC got in first punch after first punch and grabbed a two-touchdown lead entering the final quarter.
BLEEDING CONTINUES INTO THE FOURTH
PC increased their lead to 17 with a field goal early in the fourth quarter. BC's Brody Carnahan answered with a 26-yard field goal, cutting the lead to 24-10. PC's Penn State-bound running back Chu Odoh hit his longest run of the afternoon and his third touchdown, a 52-yard score, increasing the PC advantage to 31-10. Bryan Porter took a Trey Tagliaferri pass two yards for a score, but after a second onside-kick attempt failed, the clock ran out on BC.
