JANUARY 15 – ORADELL, NJ – In the first BNC United Red Division Wrestling Match of the season, BC emerged victorious, defeating Paramus Catholic 30-27.  The Crusaders needed to erase an early 0-12 deficit and ultimately put together 7 winning bouts (of 14), four with bonus points, to create the separation.
     The match started at 144 pounds and the Paladins struck with a pair of first-period pins (worth 6 points each).  Manny Gusfa won by decision 7-3 at 157 pounds to cut the lead to 12-3.  Daniel Washburn followed up with a 10-2 major decision, cutting the lead to 12-7.  At 175 pounds, AJ DiGionvanni earned a technical fall (15-0) at 3:02 to tie the score at 12.  The Paladins went on a three-bout run, earning decisions at 190, 215 and 285 pounds and re-establishing a 21-12 lead.
     At this point, a pair of freshman lightweights recorded a pair of statement wins.  Ryan Halal pinned his opponent at 106 pounds in 3:38 to cut the Paladin lead to 21-18 and classmate Anthony Riotto pinned his opponent at 113 pounds in 5:24 seconds to give the Crusaders their first lead of the evening, 24-21.
     The Paladins tied the score once again at 120 pounds, but sophomore Matthew Mulligan grabbed a hard-fought 7-6 decision at 126 pounds to lead 27-24.  Lucas Reeves was now in the pivotal spot.  If he can earn a victory at 132 pounds, the freshman can effectively put the match on ice.  He knew what was required and he responded with a 2-1 victory, giving BC a 30-24 lead with one bout to go.
