Frosh Defeat Pope John XXIII 29-15

Crusaders building momentum before big BC-DBP contest

SPARTA, NJ - The Bergen Catholic Crusader Freshman Football Team steamrolled the Lions of Pope John XXIII on a beautiful, 80o sunny Thursday afternoon.  Austin Bryan started the Crusader motor, running for 40 yards on his first two carries and picking up a late hit call against a frustrated (already) home lion den.  Two plays later Cruz Araujo took a pitch from Jaxson Bishop around right end, and converted it into a 19-yard touchdown run.  Connor Coyne drove the extra point through the uprights and BC led 7-0 after the initial drive.
Bryan made a pair of good tackles, one on the ensuing kickoff and one on a sweep play to the left, bringing up third and long.  Araujo rushed off the edge, pressuring the QB and Bishop came up to make a sound tackle, forcing the Lions to punt.  On the following possession, Araujo carried the ball 30 yards up-field to Lions territory.  The quarter ended and BC changed sides of the field.  The Crusaders were faced with third and long and Bishop hit Cruz for a screen pass, giving BC a first down.  Then, on first down, they ran a tunnel screen to Austin Bryan who converted Jaxson's pass to a 28-yard touchdown pass.  Bishop converted with Karter Baker for the two-point conversion and BC led 15-0.  BC forced a punt very late in the half and took over at their own 38-yard line when Coach Campy called a dynamite counter pass that Bishop executed to perfection, hitting Nate "the Great" Wortley in stride for a 62-yard TD strike.  BC took a 22-0 lead into the half after Coyne hit his second PAT.
After a Wortley sack, Araujo intercepted a PJ pass play down the field.  BC started running the bal with Dylan Milano and big-play maker Austin Bryan.  Bishop called his own number on second and long and picker up 15 yards to give BC a first down in the red zone.  After a pair of short completions to Karter Baker, giving 3rd and short at the five, Milano picked up 4 yards, putting the ball at the one yard line.  Dylan punched it over from the one on the next play and BC took a 29-0 lead.
BC had sound defensive play all day from Carter Sabathia, Benjamin Alipui, Errol Natto, Thomas Giovacco, "Big" Michael Tremarco, Bryan, Baker, Araujo, Alexander Choe (who recovered a fumble), Milano, Anthony Randesi, Cameron Graham David Bisharah and Ryan Heuss.
The Offensive line was strong, giving BC the opportunity to control the game.  Kudos to Dominick Ginestra, Mathias Deleon, Vincent Dooley, Adriel Catellanos, Kaedan Kasper and a big nice job to Lu'ay Gjokaj.
