ORADELL, NJ - In a match-up between two of the county's top programs, undefeated Bergen Catholic faced undefeated Ramapo on the pitch.
Frank Burns penalty kick, after being fouled in the box, gave BC a 1-0 lead in the game's fifth minute as he drove his shot to the top left corner of the goal. The teams went into the half tied.
In the forty-fifth minute, the Green Raiders struck on a 10 yard lob pass over the defense that was quickly kicked into the goal.
In the forty-seventh minute,
John Semelsberger lofted a long pass to the middle of the field to
James Melia. The pass was defended, but Melia was able to direct the ball to his right to
Dangelo Tavarez who drove a short shot into the goal, giving BC a 2-1 lead. Shortly after, Melia was fouled in the box, giving him an opportunity for a PK. Melia delivered and the Crusaders had an insurance goal, up 3-1.
The Green Raiders offense creates deception for a referee. They are very effective at possessing the ball within 15 yards of the goal and then cutting one or two forwards to the goal, past the defense as the ball is passed forward. For the second time in the game it appeared as if the referees missed an offsides and for the second time in the game, Ramapo scored to make the score 3-2 BC.
In the seventy-second minute, Ramapo was fouled in the box and took advantage of a penalty kick of their own and the game would ultimately have to be decided in overtime.
The teams played to the first of two ten-minute, "golden goal" overtimes, unable to decide a victor. But the Crusader offense struck with
John Semelsberger finding
Dangelo Tavarez for the game winner.
John Coleman made 6 saves in securing the victory for the home Crusaders who improved to 5-0 on the season.
