On Thursday, September 11, Bergen Catholic traveled to Montvale to introduce the young Crusaders and Green Knights to a fantastic rivalry between two great schools. BC cut through the defense of Saint Joseph, defeating them 5-1.
BC pressured the Green Knights early in the first half.
Taras Martiuk hit a stunning flick over a defender to initiate a counter attack. BC was unable to convert after strong pressure from the SJR defense and a nice stop by their goalkeeper.
Taras Martiuk scored a well-placed shot after a rebound from a shot from
Billy Trimble was blocked by the goalie. Martiuk set the ball in front of himself took the shot, and scored the opener for the Crusaders.
After end-to-end action,
Billy Trimble received a penalty kick after being fouled in the box. He drove the ball into the goal to increase BC's advantage to two.
Max Rivarola shot the ball into the top corner of the net from far out when
Billy Trimble tapped the ball lightly to him making it 3-1. The Crusaders continued to press the tempo of the game until halftime.
The second half started, and both teams pushed their all in the game. Saint Joseph pushed for goals, but every single time they tried to advance through the defense,
Rhemy Garcia and
Ashton Alvarado, who played very well on defense, kept them out of the box to prevent chances. Goalkeeper
Dylan McMahon, who had three saves in the first half and played well, was subbed out due to injury.
Juan Marin kept out four shots from the Green Knight attack throughout the second half, and both keepers had amazing performances throughout the game.
The game continued with a corner kick handed to Bergen Catholic after a deflection off a Saint Joseph defender.
Ashton Alvarado would then cross the ball into the box and score due to an "own" goal by a Saint Joseph defender, sending their keeper the wrong way and making it 4-1.
BC controlled the tempo of the game as the Green Knights scrambled to find any opportunities to get back into the game. Those thoughts were shut down once again for Saint Joseph as a through ball was delivered to Rueda Sam. He scored cleanly to add to the BC lead, making it 5-1.
Back passes, chances, shots, and interceptions all occurred quickly in the last five minutes of the game, with Joseph trying their best to get some kind of compensation goal, however, the game would end 5-1 to Bergen Catholic against Saint Joseph.
The team played amazingly well with
Liam Fenton and
Michael Luca Marinuzzi both pairing well in the midfield to support the attack and defense. The next time Saint Joseph and Bergen Catholic face each other will be on October 9
th at Bergen Catholic High School. Live Jesus in our hearts Forever.
