WALDWICK, NJ – The Crusaders took care of business on Saturday evening in the first half of the county semifinal double-header at Waldwick HS. BC defeated Ridgewood 3-2 in overtime on
Frankie Burns' breakaway goal late in the first overtime to break a 2-2 deadlock. If you watch the video:
https://tinyurl.com/gwg-bc3-r2, you can actually see the Ridgewood defender grabbing Frank by the shoulder to prevent him from shooting, but Burns, after hitting his AFTERBURNER, threw on the brakes, set his left foot and drove the ball past a less-than-ready keeper who could only think of what was and what will never be.
John Semelsberger got the Crusaders rolling in the opening minutes of the first half and D'Angelo Tavarez put the Crusaders up quickly. But after that auspicious start, Ridgewood came back. Tying the game with under a minute in the first half, the teams would continue to play the next 49 minutes or so even at two thanks to a stifling defense and play from
John Coleman who turned away two shots to earn the victory. Tavarez and Owen McCauley each assisted on goals.
The Crusaders will face Ramapo in the BCCA Championship this Saturday. More to follow as the Crusaders seek their fourth county title in school history and second under Coach Pete Berkanish. BC's last title was a stunning win over Ridgewood on a Saturday night game played at Indian Hills.
